58,000 miles / 4 year service

Recommended Posts

My 2016 BRZ was due for it's 4th service last month and I booked it in at my local Toyota dealer as they are only 3 miles away, however due to Covid-19 they shut everything down and gave me a new date of 4th June! According to the service book the service must be done within one year of the last service or the warranty becomes invalidated! So yesterday I thought I'd phone my nearest Subaru dealer and it turns out that they are open and I can have the car serviced on Thursday! They are about 20 miles away but have offered to pick the car up from home. The downside of this is the service is £540 vs Toyota's fixed price of £395, however it does include the rear diff oil change.

Why is there such a difference in pricing. Would there be a number of 'extras' that Toyota would charge on top of the £395 and would Toyota be able to up-date the on-line service record?

Toyota have relaxed the rules on servicing during the pandemic, so you could have stayed with the June date. So your warranty would not have been invalidated and they should have told you that. If you get it serviced at Subaru the then I can't see how Toyota could update the service record. Why not just wait till June and save the money?

Also given you are on 58,000 miles you should get the spark plugs changed. I would check that is on the Toyota price.

Thanks, although as my post states it is a BRZ so possibly only Subaru can up-date the service record?

Roxby Subaru said that the park plugs can be changed at the 5th service next year given that it hasn't reached 60k yet. Presumably the plugs will last more than this so it would be nice to put off the inevitable extra cost. I doubt this cost is in the Toyota price!

He/she has got a BRZ, so really should have it done at Subaru if they want to keep up the manufacture service record.

@1000 PR perhaps ask the Subaru dealer about the warranty conditions if you don't have the service as we are in exceptional times at the moment and it's non-essential.

The question you ask on Subaru service prices being higher than Toyota are simple. Volume. Toyota deal with a lot more cars than Subaru and have a very optimised supply chain and workforce. The benefits of scale.

Only Subaru can update your online service record not toyota as it is not jointly shared like the platform is.

For warranty claims, as long as the service has been done to the time (1 yr or 10K miles , what ever is earlier) and OE quality parts, theoretically you can get it done anywhere and consumer laws will protect your warranty. You seem to be a high mileage driver so unless you have had 4 services and this is your fifth in 4 yrs , you might have missed one of your warranty conditions.
Spark plug change service, aka year 6 service is £600 at toyota , so it is not included in your £395 service.
Home pick up and drop is a great serviceat this time of pandemic. Take the offer up and treat this + diff oil as the difference in price.

Thanks. That’s really helpful. I’ve only had the car 6 months and the PO had done 54k in 3 years and with the last service done at 48k at Subaru. I wish I’d haggled a little more with the seller with hindsight.

I’d like to think that Subaru will honour the warranty given that it’s only just past the due date as a result of Covid-19 but I can only ask I guess.

It is very unlikely you will need to warranty claim is the way to look at it. Very few things go wrong on this platform. Good luck

I am now getting my servicing done at Abbey Motorsport, not Subaru. I don't anticipate any issue with warranty claims. Gone are the days of the servicing monopoly and I have paperwork for the service.

I phoned up a Toyota garage before buying my 86 (2016 plate at 53k miles) to ask them about this service because I wanted to use it as a bargaining tool to get more money off when buying the car.

When I phoned up the garage they informed me the spark plug service is now standardised as part of the standard price service of £395. Of course, that's just one guy on the phone and could be wrong, but I hope he isn't...

If the spark plug service is included at £395 that's a bargain! When is your service due? ie. when will you find out for sure? Does this also include the rear diff oil? I did think about taking the car to a Subaru specialist but are they not all about Impreza's, etc? A work colleague said to wait as long as possible for the service, ie every 10,000 miles but that seems a long time to wait for an oil change. I guess most people on here go for an annual service?

My BRZ service at Roxby Subaru went ahead today without any issues so no complaints other than forking out a small fortune!

Your service should be every 12 months or 10,000 miles whichever comes first. For me it's the mileage first. Every 10K miles is fine for an oil change. I seriously doubt you'll get rear diff oil and plugs included in that service price. My fuel filter will be due changing at the next service for the second time round, I'm seriously not looking forward to that one as it's around £600.

They don't make it clear as found this

Prices include all service parts as required for the given age/mileage, except automatic transmission fluid, timing belt and vacuum pump where applicable.

Excellent, however it goes onto say

In addition to these prices your vehicle may also require Maintenance Options. This is due to different servicing schedules with difference vehicles.

Huh?

So, given the amount of 6yr old or 60k mile cars surely we must have a few club members that have had the spark plugs changed since Toyota simplified the pricing structure ...

....or did you all get them done when in for a recall lol

Unfortunately I bought my car not long ago and the next service is due in December so I won't be able to confirm anything for you.

I doubt they'd do the rear diff oil for you included in that price, but honestly it's worth giving them a ring (or maybe giving a couple Toyo garages a ring just in case they differ :S although they shouldn't).

I'll be doing an annual service on my own, the previous owner kept to it, and as I'm still under warranty I've got to keep it annual so I don't invalidate it.

After checking the car over this weekend I found that annoyingly Roxby Subaru didn't stamp the bodywork warranty booklet. In addition, during  replacing the pollen filter, they refitted the glove box but not the little damper on the side and also left the control pad hanging out underneath! I fixed this myself but this shouldn't have happened when paying a lot of money for a service. They sent me a text to give marks out of 5 which I only gave 2. Was this too harsh? They couldn't wash or vacuum the car due to Covid-19 which is fair enough but I would have hoped for some little extra's instead.  The good news however is that Subaru UK have confirmed that due to Covid-19 there will not be any void in the warranty despite being 4 weeks past the service due date.

Next service I'll probably go to a different Subaru garage or if not, my local Toyota garage!
