Hi All,

I'm based in Trowbridge in WIltshire - got my '12 Pearl White 86 about 6 weeks ago; absolutely adore it. I was eyeing up modifications of my own even before I found the car, so I was thrilled when I was able to actually make a few little changes of my own! I actually work in Culham near Oxford, so if there's anybody between here and there - I've probably seen you!

I've also decided to keep my Mazda 6 as the workhorse - I've not tried to see how many fence panels one can get in the 86; but I don't think its many.

As I said, I've made a few little mods so far; an FT86 UEL manifold (catted), Milltek overpipe - I've got a Milltek catback in my cupboard - and just making a decision about which frontpipe to opt for (I'm considering the Berk (catted) one at the moment), but we'll see.

I'll write a proper post about these bits another time - but in the meantime I thought I'd just write to say hello - and look forward to listening and contributing to discussions on here!

Bye for now!

Peter

ooohh... also, mine has got its valve spring recall soon - intrigued to see how they get on. I don't know if Toyota might offer a Supra as a courtesy car....? :D

Welcome! I'm only over in West Ashton so surprised I haven't seen you before!

Have you got your recall booked in with Platinum Toyota? I'm hoping to get mine done there but wanted a good price on a service at the same time...

Thanks for the welcome; definitely a lot of people with fine taste!

I have got mine booked in at Platinum, yes - they said they've done one already; so fingers crossed there's no issues. It's due in tomorrow, and while they said it'll take three days, I can't pick it up again until Thursday, so I'll le you know how it gets on! Can't really comment about the servicing though; it had its 6-yr last Sept, so it doesn't really need any extra work. They also offered to do the spark plugs and clutch for just the cost of the parts - £85 & £190ish respectively - (it seems a few people have mentioned this), but plugs were part of the 6-yr service, and the clutch has only done 35k, so I turned the offer down.

Might be worth mentioning a discounted service cost though... especially if it needs new plugs!!

Welcome aboard, Peter. Enjoy the car. Have you had it remapped yet? You'll need to do it that with the manifold, though as you've still got the primary cat, it's probably not much different to stock. I'm not sure I'd bother with a Berk cat for the front pipe, better to go with a straight though pipe if you've still got a primary cat.

I'm afraid you won't get a Supra as a courtesy car. I got a Blue Edition with Performance Pack, see if you can better that. 🤣

I am definitely enjoying it! Not entirely practical - but I can live with that :)

I've not had it remapped yet; the manufacturer and supplier of the manifold (FT86 Speedfactory, in the US) implied that while it's certainly better to have it mapped, it can cope without one perfectly well - but a mapping session is something I'm saving up for, and plan to do it as soon as reasonably possible. I must admit, I'm not committed to making maximum power... I'm just(!) looking for the nice burble, and hopefully my set up is similar to some of the videos I've seen on the net.

As for the recall - I dropped it off this morning. No Supra, as you said; I got a Yaris instead. An automatic Yaris. It is a petrol-hybrid though, so it's quite interesting just wafting around in utter silence. Must be what being inside a bubble feels like...

The mapping will more increase the mid-range torque which is definitely worth doing, but keeping the primary cat may limit what benefit you can get.  But, it would be worth getting it mapped. The map won't make a difference to the sound as such, so it if doesn't burble now, it's unlikely to after the map.

Enjoy the Aygo. 😉

That's what I've read elsewhere too. I've had it on the rolling road as a baseline, and there's quite a dip - kind of surprising that Subaru didn't design that out from the start - although I guess uniform delivery of power across the rev range might have had to sacrificed for economy, or something else... especially as it (was) a brand new engine design.

I'll do a seperate post thread about the mods when I get a sec, but in the meantime, I think a remap is on the cards. I've been in touch with ECUtek and the closest to me that they recommend is H-Dev, so I think I'll touch base with them...

The Aygo's going well though; I haven't dumped the brake pedal by mistake yet, and sitting at the drive-thru at McD's in total silence was so awkward it was funny - but overtaking? Forget it.

Not sure what kind of cat ft86 use on their UEL but not sure if decatting 2nd cat would be the greatest from an emissions and mot point of view but I could be wrong.

I've got my manifold decatted but running the primary 2nd cat. Maybe swap out for a HFC if I can find a suitable set up which will still pass mot

I'm not sure what cat it is (beyond being a high-flow one!)... Are there some manufacturers of cats that are better than others then is that what you mean?

I contacted the dvsa who said that, strictly speaking, if a car has a cat removed, it's an mot failure - regardless of emissions performance. I guess it then comes down to the person testing it - whether they know to look for two cats... or, they might just overlook it anyway!!

Welcome aboard lad, hopefully see you at some.of the local meets. I'm down in warminster.

You had your valve springs done. I'm just waiting on platinum to be able to get me booked in. Just wondering how it went with them.

Thanks very much Rob!

I'll keep my eye out for some local meets; although not seen too many in this area (unless I'm not looking in the right place (which is quite possible!))

I did have my valve springs done - I contacted Platinum as soon as i read about the issue on here, and they had it booked in within 2/3 weeks. Mainly dealt with Darrell in the office, and becuase they had to have it a bit longer (as I work away) I was in communicating with two different techies, both of whom knew what they were doing. They said the job would take 3 days, and that's exactly how they took! Mine was the first manual that 'my' tech had done, but there ws no issues whatsoever - they've both taken a course on how to do it, so they were pretty clued up on it.

AND they complemented me on my manifold :D

... actually, on that subject - if you've got any modifications, it'd be worth mentioning it beforehand... just in case. My exhaust was alright, as it was a standard fit using Subaru gaskets, but like I said, it'd be good to tell them in advance.

I go to a lot of castle combe race days.

Awesome trays good to know. Last time I was in contact with them they we're only doing automatics.

Yeah I've got a TD turbo fitted and a full hks exhaust system so slightly worried about them messing with the engine. Although I've never had any complaints about platinum.

I might have to have a trip to castle combe soon, that'd be good. I've not done a track day before - not owned anything worth doing it in!

I might be wrong, but if the engine is modified that heavily, they'll take it up to Macclesfield (i think). You can still arrange it through platinum, and they'll stick on a trailer up there - there's a gt86 specialist there who is doing recall work for modified engines.

... Bit of a pain having to go through a few more hurdles - and you might find they need it for longer - but at least you'd know it was being taken care of properly.

I'd be interested to know how you get on!

If this dealer isn't confident in doing the work, then it may get referred to RRG Macc' but they have to then agree to do it. I'm fairly sure they will. There is a fairly long wait though because everyone wants to go to RRG Macc', so it will be dealt with on an individual basis. I'm back to RRG Macc' this morning to pick my car up after a fueling issue yesterday, so will catch up with Richard there this morning and see where they are up to with the recall waiting list.

I was told by Richard to ring back in a few months as they're not even adding people to the waiting list anymore! That popular . I will certainly be trying. Hope there's no cut off date for this recall...

I've just got back from RRG and had a good old natter about the recall. Richard said that he is booked till November and is not taking any more bookings yet, but has a waiting list that you can be added to. There is no cut off date to get the recall done by, there won't be as there will always be cars that years down the line will not have had it for one reason or another.

The problem for RRG is that, if say they do the recall on a car which will likely be modded all the way from say Essex or something and there is a problem post recall, how will it be recovered and all that. It makes it quite complicated. Obviously he has had to prioritise customers who bought their car from RRG and those that are regular customers for service. That alone has taken the list to November! For those with stock cars the advice is, use your local dealer.
