BBK Options

Recommended Posts

Starting to look at a BBK again and I know the Reyland kit is the popular option but I've also been looking at the godspeed kits and the k-sport option. I'm sure someone had a spreadsheet of how different kits affected the brake bias but I can't find that anymore!

Options I'm looking at:

http://www.reyland.co.uk/subaru-impreza - the standard kit with reyland discs

https://www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk/311-big-brake-kits- - either of the kits - although the 6 pot may be overkill?

http://www.tuningdevelopments.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=502_625_628&products_id=1387

What are people's opinions on the k-sport or either of the godspeed kits? Would be looking for advice mainly on how they change brake bias and pad choice availability.

Also interested in response. Discs and pads may need to be replaced soon anyway so contemplating upgrades.

Also interested in approx fitting costs.

It's hard to know how to respond to this one too. All the kits look good value. I've got the 330mm Reyland 4 pot AP kit. It's fantastic. I did not go with K Sport as they are a lesser known brand and I was concerned that replacement pads choices may be more limited. But really I wouldn't touch K Sport because they are not well known compared to the likes of AP and Brembo. From what I understand if you put a set of 4 pot Brembos for an Impreza it messes up the brake bias. The Reyland kit doesn't have this issue.

Just to add I've had the Reyland non-floating discs on for a year and a half and 20K miles. No problem at all whatever the use. I think my pads and discs will likely last another 20K miles, which makes it good value.

I think it's a case of you get what you pay for. From what I remember the Godspeed discs have straight vanes as opposed to curved and the calipers themselves are smaller and cheaper. I don't imagine you compromise on quality maybe just outright performance, I'm tempted to go for the 4 pot kit as it will do everything I'd need, I suppose it depends on your requirement.

The brake snobs of world would steer towards Brembo or AP because well, they're Brembo and AP... but I can't say I've heard any horror stories on K sport. They have been knocking around for quite a while, some say they're pants other say their good and others say the are copies of Tarox but I've never seen any evidence behind any claim, standard internet talk.

In the ford scene (where I came from) ksport are fitted to loads of cars with no problems but they will squeak with light use. My car had ap 6 pots on the front that had been on there for 9 years + and had been badly painted (prior to me getting the car) but we're faultless. The Muppet who painted them painted everything in situ including pads, pins, bolts etc.

I'm looking into getting a hi-spec front setup and have spoken to them about having a custom rear setup to match which they can do. Only in Dartford too. One thing to keep in mind is pad availability unless you always by 2 sets so you have a spare

I had KSports for 1.5yrs now. More than 10 track days and finishing 2nd set of yellowstuff pads later still like them.

If I were to choose now, I would either go with them again or go for Reyland AP kit with their own disks.

Reyland's kit included Ferrodo DS 2500 pads, so like-for-like (with Reyland rather than AP disks) they are not that much more expensive 1e3cd360abcbaba44bb1ddf3f91696bf.jpg907b85a180de82bfac85a6bcb1db714b.jpg

I don’t post on here much but I can certainly speak to the quality of AP 6pots, I run a gt86 racecar and have completed >15 Trackdays now and still on my original Ferodo DS3000 pads and I assure you I am not easy on brakes. The 6 pots are expensive but the braking power is immense, the bias with 4pots on the rear is perfect and I rarely trigger the abs unless I get on them terribly late.

@Lauren brand doesn't really bother me, as long as they're decent. Pad choice with the k-sport is a valid point that I've not checked but it's one of the more expensive options as with DS2500 pads it's not much cheaper than the reyland kit. Although, if I was to go with the reyland kit I'd be tempted with the AP discs to get the curved vanes. Out of interest, how quickly did your reyland kit ship?

@Varelco I'd expect the godspeed discs to be straight vaned just like the reyland ones which isn't a deal breaker if it's saving me £500! It all depends on the brake bias of the brembo kit really. The AP calipers will be fine.

@VAD17 so, nothing wrong with the k-sport but with the same pads the price difference doesn't justify getting a cheaper brand?

@Mike

Here some of my observations of the various kits - bare in mind I thought about this for 18 months before committing to the Reyland kit.

I actually ordered but then cancelled both the Essex AP Racing Sprint kit and the Godspeed AP kit, before settling on the Reyland kit, this was after speaking with @Ade and one of the technical team at AP Racing.

These are for the approx 330mm kits (355mm+ kits have different requirements)

Reyland - AP Kit:

Pro's:

  • AP Caliper - CP9200 (2 piece aluminum body)
  • 4 Pistons
  • Dust Boots - Made by Brembo
  • Perfect for Street and track
  • Common Pad Size
  • 330mm x 28mm discs - 2 piece
  • Good thermal capacity
  • High quality caliper by premium brake manufacturer.
  • Keeps stock brake bias
  • Complete kit - Calipers, Pads, Brake lines, brackets, discs
  • Various disc options - Either bolted or floating brake disc hat/bell. AP or Reyland disc's.
  • Clear's the majority of 17" wheels
  • Latest design of caliper by AP Racing - including new paint finish
  • Used by various members of the community - with extensive track use

Con's:

  • Reasonably expensive
  • Custom made brackets, which you need to shim to get perfect fitment
  • Won't fit under stock wheels without spacer.

Godspeed - Brembo's:

Pro's:

  • Brembo caliper
  • 4 piston
  • Dust boots
  • 330 x 28 discs
  • 2 piece discs
  • Cheap

Con's:

  • Unknown caliper model
  • Unknown caliper material
  • Unknown piston sizes - not sure what effect this will have on brake bias
  • Unknown pad size
  • No brake lines included

Godspeed - AP Kit:

Pro's:

  • AP Caliper - CP9040 (2 piece aluminum body)
  • Dust Boots - Made by Brembo
  • Common Pad Size
  • Good thermal capacity
  • High quality caliper by premium brake manufacturer.
  • Latest design of caliper by AP Racing - including new paint finish

Con's

  • Reasonably expensive
  • Caliper designed for a 362mm disc - not 330mm as included
  • Caliper designed for a 32mm thick disc - not 30mm as included
  • Ø330mm disc in this caliper will leave a fairly large gap between the discs OD and the calipers disc pathway and this gap can be prone to collecting road debris.
  • 6 pistons - overkill
  • No brake lines included

K-Sport:

Pro's:

  • Cheap
  • Used by various members of the community - with extensive track use
  • Clear's the majority of 17" wheels
  • Complete kit - Calipers, Pads, Brake lines, brackets, discs
  • 330mm x 32mm? disc - 2 piece

  • Unknown piston sizes - not sure what effect this will have on brake bias
  • Unknown pad size
  • Unknown replacement disc price
  • Won't fit under stock wheels without spacer.

Pro's:

  • Cheap

  • 326mm x 30mm disc
  • Various disc options
  • Common pad size
  • Dust boots
  • 4 pistons

Con's

  • Shifts brake bias forward massively
  • Steel calipers - heavy
  • Bleed nipples need swapping - i.e. caliper refurb before fitment

@will300 perfect post, thank you! Looks like the godspeed kits are out - the AP kit I did think would be overkill and couldn't find anyone else selling the caliper used as a 330mm kit. Too many unknowns with the brembo kit to fork out £1k for! Think it might well be the reyland kit and let Gary worry about the shims :D  I assume 949racing 6uls (17x8 +40?) you ran had plenty of clearance?

Just ordered my Reyland kit in red. Most likely I will get Gary to fit it while the car is with RRG for the recall in May.

Thanks to @will300 for the comprehensive pros and cons list. That the was the final push to say the Reyland kit is the right one for me.

Btw - for those interested in KSport caliper and pad sizes.

KSport 8-pot caliper for 356mm disks I believe is the same size as AP 6-pot CP5555 (but pls correct me if I am wrong here).

Brake pads are CP3894D54 for AP calipers (easier to find this way).

ECB Yellowstuffs are under £200 (both fronts and stock rears), Bluestuff is just over £200 (incl delivery). e5b4dfcc807b80eb3f4f186496466418.jpg
