Recall issued on cars to have valve springs replaced 2012-2013

Agreed it's worth asking for that, as I had this when I had my wiring loom replaced. To pay the full cost would have been thousands. It still wasn't cheap, but was a lot cheaper. However, in this case it would likely come down to who had the cam cover off last time and misapplied the sealant who you'd think would be more liable. If the OP knows that information then that would help.

I am friends with Andy on Facebook so may ask if he has a contact for me to speak to.

Engine has never been out in my ownership. Had full toyota service history up until then. Toyota press car, dealers demo, local chap then me. So all done at the two local dealers unless something happened whilst it was a press car. I have asked them to check their files to see what show up.

@Lauren do you know if claims can be reimbursed after I pay? As I think they want a quick answer as I have their loan car and probably don't want the 86 taking up their workshop space.

I'm afraid I do not know, as I've not been in that situation. I've got agreement before work has gone ahead, even if it means waiting. I wouldnt worry too much about the courtesy car, they won't be really.

Suppose whilst it is in their workshop in bits and I have their posh lexus the pressure is on them 😂 so yer leverage is the key I suppose.

Dug through my service history and confirmed toyota themselves had the engine out in 2014. So confirms the techs comments from today.

I don't know what forum members think but I'd be hoping for whichever Toyota dealership did the last engine out and/or Toyota to be footing part of this cost especially given the techs comments.

I feel my weakest link is the techs comments been a verbal chat. Could be hard to get something in writing.

Will see what happens today.

Dealership were happy to approach toyota on my behalf. So a waiting game now I guess.

Only issue with me not contacting them direct I suppose is I don't know what is been said 😒

Although they have been helpful so far so will leave them to it for now...

Just had my 86 back today after recall work, told them i wanted the spark plugs changed when engine out. After inspection was advised that i needed a new clutch as well.

Picked up today from frf toyota in swansea in for 3 days ,price for spark plug change and new clutch came to £239 all in not bad when i hear of other prices on here.

Car feels different and quieter than before drove home with radio off to listen .

Dealer stated that the car was due a service in april and would send a reminder to book in  3 months after a full rebuild they want to change the oil again i think i will pass .

Cannot fault the work done on the car and service given by frf swansea in dealing with the recall and hope now to enjoy driving the  car without anymore worries.

My dealer rang today wanting to book me in for the recall and order the parts.  He left a message.  I don't want to be the first one to have a Cosworth done there ie a guinea pig.  I am going to ring him back to try and put him off.  I have not had a letter either.  Do I have to use the local dealer?

Strange they want to drop the oil in 3 months.  As far as I am aware springs shouldn't "bed in" and leave any particles in the oil.

Good to hear you had a good experiance with the recall 😀

I was told that Abbey Sport are doing some of the rebuilds for Modified cars in the South East Keith on behalf of Toyota.

Maybe an idea to contact Mark and see what he says...

Not heard of this before. Unless they have arranged some kind of payment scheme with him.

Could be handy for @Leevsfortyone if it turns out to be true...

The engine has not had a full rebuild. It has had the cam cover off, cams removed and valve springs changed. That is all. When I had mine done I left it a full 10K till the next service before I changed the oil as per the service schedule.

Hopefully will get the car back this weekend. New cams have arrived and gone in. Reassembly time 😊

Hopefully they clean all the old sealant off as it's covered in the stuff.

Glad it's all being sorted.

Re: sealant. In that first photo is that black gunk sealant stuck on inside edge in the top left?

Appears to be and that was around the affected camshaft area too. Hence this is why the technician was curious who had taken it apart before hand.

I have a HKS supercharged 2012 gt86 and Toyota Head Office have just told me that the only people who will touch modified engines are Macclesfield ,I live near Salisbury,Wiltshire  so they get the AA to come and pick up the car, take it back and return it after 5 days,if you want a courtesy car that is sent separate just make sure you tell them you cannot fit into an Aygo as that is the courtesy car they usually send,I have a 3 month waiting list so will not be done until end of April

Managed to cover 100 miles so far since getting the 86 back from its recall with new cams etc.

Seems to drive nice enough as it did before and the new clutch feels alot nice rthen the old one so a benefit there 😊 also no more noisey release bearing!

Only niggle I have which I need to contact them with is the Aircon seems very noisey. I am sure before there was no difference in sound on a low fan speed with the Aircon on or off. Now when you switch it on there is a fairly noticeable sound with it on. Anyone able to comment on what theirs is like?

Also invoice states I was charged £10 for an oil filter which is no big problem in the scheme of things but the invoice lists 5w-40 oil. Hopefully just a misprint but need to question this and the Aircon with them tomorrow.  Other then that seems tip top and it's nice to be back in a car you feel connected to the road in unlike the lexus 😂

Thanks @Lauren and anyone else along the way that helped with the issues I had

Gavin does your car feel like new again, as mine certainly does.

The real test will be on Saturday 29th February when I have my first trackday of the year at the Three Sisters and then on Monday 2nd March at Cadwell Park emoji14.png

My Aircon is all OK.....

Haven't really had a play yet. Just done some gentle miles due to new clutch etc. Feels smooth enough though.
