Windscreen polishing or not?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I got my 63 reg 86 for almost 3 months now. When I got it I saw there are some chips here and there which is normal-ish for 3 year old car but today I drove in sunny weather and think they are getting more? I just took a good look and they are definitely small scratches. I only use autoglym screenshash and got brand new denso wiper blades. Do you think it will be covered under the warranty? It is not normal to get scratched that easy!

I'm not sure what you're asking here? Are you asking if polishing a windscreen will help (which is what I gathered from the title) or whether it's covered under warranty?

The answers to the above are possibly and no.

As above. I'd say you have zero chance of getting that changed. My screen is marked/scratched lightly also. I blame the previous owner scrubbing a dirty windscreen with a dirty sponge.

Thanks all for the replies! I was asking if polishing will cover the small ones at least. I drive on A45 everyday and there is a rough patch where the tarmac is disintegrating and yeah.. Will look at replacement probably some point after new year. Guess I see most of you on the 27th! If not Merry Christmas to everyone!

Interesting you mention this, I've never had a car with such a scratched windscreen! I'm not sure what glass Toyota use or how its laminated/protected but it seems to attract scratches like no other! Also smears and watermarks are terrible.

I've tried various polishes and RainX type products with no luck. Let me know if you find something that makes it better! I'm actually looking forward to it cracking so I have a good excuse to replace it LOL!

Probably famous last words, but my windscreen is still excellent. North of 55k miles and over four years old.

I'm a bit anal about keeping glass and wipers clean and in good condition. I think problems start when dirt is allowed to build up on the blades and then scraped across the screen. I keep the blades clean and replace them regularly - on third set I think.

I have to admit I haven't noticed any scratching but the glass definitely seemed to smear a lot when I first picked the car up.

I'd prioritise making sure you have decent screenwash and use it generously on each swipe to keep your wipers clean especially in the winter season. I personally treat all my cars with a thorough glass polish and then Gtechniq G1 coating on all glass and wipers and since have had no problems with smearing or scratching.

Then again GT is my weekend warrior and she gets washed every weekend too so I haven't got a lot to support my claims...

Funnily enough I noticed this today on mine. A lot of light scratches. Not aligned with the wipers so must have been during washing somewhere. Bit annoying.

Never noticed it on other cars I've owned. Wonder if it's more noticeable cause of angle of screen versus sun (or something...)

Somebody suggested to me that the best option is to make a glass claim on your insurance, as that doesn't affect your premiums and have a specialist company take care of that. But I don't think I trust some company like Autoglass
