  1. So after upgrading my head-unit to a Pioneer 160DAB (initially for Apple Carplay etc - not specifically for audio reasons), I thought I would tackle the speakers and saw on the forums that the TOY 165 by FOCAL were considered a decent bang-for-buck, plug and play replacement without too much faffing about. I have had them in for a couple of days now and can say I'm not very impressed. The tweeters are better mind you, but the door speakers really don't have much volume to them for some reason? I was beginning to think I may have not wired them properly but it's literally just the one connector (pushed all the way in), and the tweeters I assume are wired as picture below. I took a 10 min drive the other day and realised that I'm pretty sure there wasn't any sound even coming out of the door speakers (or it was too low, I couldn't feel any vibration with my hand either) - but then on the way back, they seemed to be playing louder. Is there something I've missed with these speakers, as the stock door speakers seem to be better so far, imo. Also I have heard about the 'running in' period for speakers, although there is also consideration that this is a myth if you look online? What are everyone's opinions?

    Focal speaker upgrade

Hi all, I'm looking for some guidance regarding an audio upgrade for my new shape BRZ. I'm currently looking into a Kenwood head unit from the UK and a 2 din OEM trim and plug and play harness from Australia made by a company called carboncarsystems which will allow me to keep my steering controls and give an OEM look but want to see what's around speaker wise to improve the sound quality. If anyone knows of something in the UK that will allow me to keep the steering controls please let me know, carboncarsystems are being a bit funny about shipping to the UK. I've seen there's a plug and play kit made by Focal https://www.bassjunkies.com/is165toy.html which looks to be good but wondered if anyone has fitted it and can give me their opinion if it's a good option to go for? While the tweeters would be out I've seen there's space for a mid tone speaker in there which comes with a JDL kit? Is it worth finding a mid tone to go in with the tweeter? I'm also interested in changing my rear speakers, I know their 4" and there are lots of options on the market but wondered what people can recommend that are yet again plug and play. I've also seen people buying an amp to go behind the head unit, whats this all about? I'm not keen on putting any speakers in the boot or covering the car in sound proofing materials, I'm simply after a good quality system which is noticeably better than the stock system. Budget wise I would spend £500 max but would like to spend less however I understand you obviously get what you pay for!! Please any advise or reviews welcome, sorry to create another audio related thread but the answer I wanted wasn't on the existing ones.

    New Speakers, Sub & Amp.

So like many others i’d had enough of the standard sound system and knew it was time to upgrade. I wanted to keep the head unit as is, so broke into the wiring and added RCA converters to the front & rear speaker lines. Built the sub box out of fibreglass, many YouTube videos of tuition. Moved the alarm light and replaced it with a Bass controller. Fitted the Focal IS605TOY Speakers, so a very easy replacement and added about 30 square feet of sound deafening to the doors, boot, arches and boot lid. Overall very happy with the sound now. The sound deadening is essential, the amount of rattles when you throw some real bass into the cabin is incredible.
  4. Inspired by this thread... http://www.gt86.org.uk/forums/topic/4907-focal-is165toy-installation-and-review/ ...I have purchased and installed the same front speakers. Following a combination of guidance from a youtube video and some of the original post I completed the job, by myself, in the dark on my driveway, on Sunday evening. It took 40-50mins from start to finish to replace all 4 speakers!! I did not completely remove the door cards though. I left everything connected to them and carefully rested them on my legs whilst sat on the sills, working around/under them. A little tricky but no screws/speakers were dropped in the process. Each door speaker took about 10-15mins to do from 'pop this screw cover off' to 'quick sound test'. The trickiest bit of the entire job was undoing the tweeter connections! The speakers are definitely an improvement on the standard things and it's made me want to swap the rears now as I prefer to be 'enveloped' in my music while driving 😁
